Olegtron and i (Skatronix) got hold of an old Alesis HR-16 drummachine. According to articles in web it was supposed to be an easy one to bend.

We found nice and simple tutorial  (  bending hr-16 ) and read it thru couple of times. First taking the bottom lid away with 4 screws and looking inside for the bottom board. Taking the another set of screws away and then locate the two rows of bending points. These bending points were found next to backpanel jacks..
Look for two rows of horizontally aligned ICs...
first 5 points soldered

On the tutorial it said that it wasnt necessary to make
connections on 2 x 2 rows, so we choose lower row for
bending points. 26 points to solder. For wiring we choose IDE cable for this project.
All 26 connections now soldered.

The YUV BENDING DISTRIBUTOR

Olegron found some very nice patching distributor
from a flee market out of town.
We got a punch of them now for next summer projects.
5 x 13 RCA-jacks all together on one panel.

Olegtron shredded couple of resistors and condensators
away from the board and made the horizontal patchbay
rows, 13 rows, 3 connection points each..
Down you can see the IDE cables other
end connected to "bending points"...

Almost done!
Closing the lids and making connection points in the middle of that IDE cable to have 2 separate machines.

The original Alesis can be used as before but by connecting the Olegtron/Skatronix YUV bending distribution unit you can produce new sounds, distortions, flams, rolls and such.
As we tested it all MIDI sent to the HR-16 was coming nicely so this bend aplied only to sounds of the drummachine. All effects are aplied to all pads on hr-16.

Happy bending!

  1. Nice beginner project. Easy to do and no electronic components exept the RCAs were used. You need soldering iron, solder, cable, rca connectors and you are ready to go. I havent done so much cirquit bending but this was very easy project and you get results very fast.
